Amanda Henry is a senior at the University of Louisville, plays golf there and also serves as Derek Fathauer’s girlfriend and caddie. We caught up with her after Fathauer advanced to the quarterfinals.
How did you and Derek meet?
Amanda Henry: We met on the driving range my freshman year,at the University of Louisville. So we both played golf out there and it was right before school started and we were just out messing around on the driving range.
Had you caddied for him before?
Henry: Once in a qualifier. It was last year sometime down in Florida and I was visiting and he signed up for a tournament and he was like, ‘I got to play in this so could you caddie for this? But he shot like 66 and 69 or something so he did really well. He sweet-talked me into this one too.
He sweet talked you? How is that?
Henry: He just asked me to come and said he couldn’t do as good with anybody else or something.
Is there payment involved?
Henry: No.
I hear you make deals on the course?
Henry: Yeah, we bet. We make little bets out there and stuff.
Out when you’re playing, or when you both are playing, or when he’s playing?
Henry: When he’s playing.
So did you make any bets on the third-round match?
Henry: Earlier we did ice cream, but he’s a big fan of ice cream.
Well who won or lost that one?
Henry: He did.
So on top of everything else you have to pay him with ice cream?
Henry: His mom’s buying the ice cream.
What was your best advice when he was 3 up, and then he all of a sudden he’s trying to make a putt just to square the match? Do you give him much advice?
Henry: I try to stay out of his way but mostly it’s about emotions I think with him. He gets nervous. He looks calm but he gets really nervous, like you can tell.
Did you feel like he was up and down at times?
Henry: I felt like the second round he was pretty consistent and then he just kind of hit a little hill and like went down.
Kind of like a marathon?
Henry: Yeah, hit a wall and then he was done, and I said, ‘Alright, let’s pull this back around,’ and he did it.
You guys, do you guys date?
Henry: Yeah, we date off and on. But right now I guess we’re dating.
When did that start back up again?
Henry: Couple months ago maybe.
What is your favorite thing you like to do when you guys go out?
Henry: Um, I don’t know. What do we do? That’s a good question. Um, I don’t know what we do. We just hang out and hang out with both the golf teams and stuff; we’re like all really good friends.
Outside of golf, do you guys do anything else together?
Henry: No, not really. He lives in Florida; I live in Kentucky.
How about movies?
Henry: Movies. We watch a lot of movies.
Do you have a favorite movie?
Henry: No, I kind of just roll with the flow of things. So does he.
