Robert B. Dickson

Robert B. Dickson, 23, of McAlester, Okla., became the first player since 1935 to win both the British and the United States Amateur Championships in the same year-the "Little Slam." Dickson won by one stroke over Marvin Giles, III, over the West Course of the Broadmoor Golf Club, Colorado Springs, Colo., scoring 285 for 72 holes.

The last player to win both in the same year was W. Lawson Little, Jr., in 1934 and 1935. Dickson led every round with scores of 71-71-74-69. He seemed to have the Championship won when Giles scored a bogey 5 on the 15th hole, giving Dickson a two-stroke lead.

However, Giles then scored a birdie 3 on the 17th, and Dickson drove into the woods on the par-4 18th. He was given a free lift from interference by overhead television cables, played to the fairway, and then onto the green seven feet from the hole. He made the putt for his par and the Championship.

Gary Cowan, the defending Champion from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, scored 298 and tied for 18th place. The Championship was delayed one day when the course became unplayable because of rain. The final two rounds were played in one day.
