E. Harvie Ward, Jr.

E. Harvie Ward, Jr., 29, of the San Francisco Golf Club, originally from North Carolina, defeated William Hyndman, III, 39, of Philadelphia, 9 and 8, in the final at the James River Course of the Country Club of Virginia, Richmond. Ward had a morning round of approximately 31-35-66 and was 5 up after nine and 8 up at lunch.

He had won the British Amateur in 1952 and the Canadian Amateur in 1954. There was a record entry of 1,493. Hillman Robbins, Jr., who subsequently went to the semifinals, set a sectional qualifying record with 66-66-132 at Memphis, Tenn.
