Robert T. Jones, Jr.

The medalists of the year before met in the final at Merion. Jones equaled his qualifying record, defeated Homans, 8 and 7, and achieved the Grand Slam by winning four major British and United States titles in one year. There were five extra-hole matches, including the longest overtime in USGA history.

Maurice McCarthy defeated George Von Elm on the 28th hole, after 10 extra holes, in the second round. McCarthy had previously made a hole-in-one in the qualifying to land a place in the playoff, won the sudden death playoff while the dew was still on the grass, and then played 19 holes to defeat Watts Gunn in the first round. That September marked Jones' final appearance in a Championship.
