Harold H. Hilton

The title went across the seas the following September when it was won by Harold H. Hilton, 42, of Liverpool, who had been British Open Champion in 1892 and 1897, and British Amateur Champion in 1900, 1901 and 1911. He was medalist in the field of 186 entries and defeated Fred Herreshoff on the 37th hole at the Apawamis Club, Rye, N.Y. Hilton was 6 up on Herreshoff after 22 holes, but Herreshoff rallied and squared the match after 34.

On the first extra hole, Hilton's approach went to the right of the green, hit a slope and rolled on. Hilton made a par 4, Herreshoff a 5, and Hilton won. Hilton's spoon shot to the 37th became legendary.
