Goya Holds Lead After Completion Of First Round At 2007 U.S. Amateur

San Francisco – Argentina’s Estanislao Goya shot a 4-under 66 to hold a two-stroke lead after the completion of the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship’s first round Tuesday.

More than half the field, 159 players, needed to finish their first round Tuesday due to a four-hour fog delay Monday. Although there was fog in the area again Tuesday morning, it was not enough to delay play.

The 19-year-old Goya played the par-70, 6,786-yard Ocean course of The Olympic Club. After opening with a bogey on the 498-yard, par-5 first hole, he recorded six birdies and just one bogey over 17 holes. After a short break, Goya, who is playing in his first USGA championship, headed to the Lake course to play his second round, which started two hours later than originally planned.

Four others who also played the Ocean course, Kyle Dickey, 22, of Summerville, S.C.; Kyle Ellis, 23, of Senatobia, Miss.; Andy Mickelson, 26, of Minooka, Ill.; and Nathan Tyler, 25, of Tucson, Ariz., were two strokes back after 2-under 68s. All four finished their first round Monday.

Eight players, led by 2007 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion Colt Knost, 22, of Dallas, Texas, were three strokes back after 1-under 69s. Knost was one of four golfers at 69 who played the par-70, 6,948-yard Lakeside course. Among those to record a 69 on the Ocean course was Danny Green, 50, of Jackson, Tenn., the 1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion who tied for low-amateur honors at the 2007 U.S. Senior Open.

For the first round, 27 players finished at even par or better, including 2007 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Cory Whitsett, 15, of Houston, Texas, who recorded a 70 on the Lake course.

The championship continues with the second round of stroke play Tuesday. Following the completion of stroke play, the field will be cut to the low 64 players who will advance to match play. The championship concludes with the 36-hole championship final Sunday.

The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

San Francisco – Results following the first round of stroke play at the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship, which concluded Tuesday at the 6,948-yard, par-70 Lakeside Course and the 6,786-yard, par-70 Ocean Course at The Olympic Club (L = Lake Course, O = Ocean Course)
