Eddie Olson, 20, of Aptos, Calif.

Advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-and-2 victory over 2007 USA Walker Cupper Jamie Lovemark … playing in his first U.S. Amateur … also played in the 2005 U.S. Junior Amateur, where he advanced to match play … his father is caddieing for him this week … home course is Ledgeview Golf & Country Club in Abbotsford … won the Canadian Men’s Amateur the week before coming to Olympic … will be exempt into the 2008 Canadian Open as a result of his victory … won his first collegiate event at the 2006 UBC Men’s Invitational … won the 2006 Canadian Junior Championship, the 2006 British Columbia Junior Championship and the 2005 Future Links Championship … runner-up at the 2004 British Columbia Juvenile and the High School Provincial … went to Japan with three other Canadian junior golfers to compete in the World Championship … Inducted into the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 … has a career-low round of 65, shot in a high school championship in 2006 … will be a sophomore at the University of Washington in 2007-08 … son of Jay and Darlene … has an older brother, Josh, who plays golf at the University of Texas-El Paso … birth date: April 14, 1988.

Michael Thompson, 22, of Tucson, Ariz.
Advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-and-1 victory over David McDaniel … playing in his third U.S. Amateur … also played in the 2004 championship, where he lost in the first round, and in 2006, where he missed the cut … won the 2007 Greystone Amateur, the 2005 Nokia Sugar Bowl Tulane and the 2004 Raising Cane Classic … runner-up at the 2007 Players Amateur, the 2005 Tunica National and the 2004 Noka Sugar Bowl Tulane … was the 2003-04 Conference USA Freshman of the Year … was also honored as the 2004 Louisiana Freshman of the Year … earned second-team All-Conference USA honors in 2003-04 … has a career-low round of 64, shot at the 2007 Players Amateur … transferred from Tulane University … will be a senior at the University of Alabama in 2007-08 … is an Eagle Scout … son of Mike and Beth … has a younger brother, Zach, who is a junior at the Air Force Academy … birth date: April 16, 1985.

Jhonattan Vegas, 23, of Venezuela
Advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-and-3 victory over Kyle Dickey … playing in his first USGA championship … won the 2006 Venezuela National Amateur … beat his younger brother Julio in the final to win the title … had four top-10 collegiate finishes … Monday qualified for the PGA Tour’s Shell Houston Open in 2003 at age 18 … son of Carlos and Maritza … has three brothers, Carlos Jr., Julio and Billy … calls his grandmother his lucky charm … birth date: Aug. 18, 1984.

 

 
Championship Facts

U.S. Amateur

PAR AND YARDAGE – The Lakeside Course at The Olympic Club will play at 6,948 yards and par 35-35—70. The Ocean Course at The Olympic Club, which will be used for the first two days of stroke play only, will play at 6,786 yards and par 35-35—70.

THE OLYMPIC CLUB – Sam Whiting, a former English professor at the University of California at Berkley, designed the Lakeside Course, which opened in 1927. Whiting also supervised construction on the Ocean Course. Following completion of the jobs, Whiting stayed on as golf course superintendent until 1954. Tom Weiskopf worked on the recently completed re-design of the Ocean Course.

TICKETS AVAILABLE – Tickets can be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com or www.ticketweb.com. Daily tickets are $15 and a weekly pass is $60. Other ticket options are also available. Children 12 and under are admitted free if accompanied by a paying adult.

COURSE SETUP – The Lakeside Course at the Olympic Club will be set for green speeds of approximately 11 feet, 6 inches on the Stimpmeter. The primary rough will be grown to 4 inches, with a strip of intermediate rough cut to 1½ inches in height. Poa annua grass covers the greens. The fairways are a rye and poa annual grass combination. The roughs also have a bit of bluegrass mixed in.

USGA SLOPE RATING® AND COURSE RATING™ – The Lakeside Course at the Olympic Club will carry a USGA Course Rating™ of 74.8 and a USGA Slope Rating® of 143. The Ocean Course will carry a USGA Course Rating™ of 74.0 and a USGA Slope Rating® of 136. An "average" Slope Rating in the U.S. is about 113.

TOTAL ENTRIES – The USGA accepted 7,398 entries for the 2007 U.S. Amateur. The most entries ever received for an Amateur championship was 7,920 in 1999 when the U.S. Amateur was played at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links.

WHO CAN ENTER – The U.S. Amateur Championship is open to amateur golfers who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4.
