1952
Jack Westland, of the Everett (Wash.) Golf and Country Club, at 47 the
oldest winner in the history of the Championship, climaxed a long and
illustrious golfing career by defeating Al Mengert, of Spokane, Wash.,
3 and 2. Westland had reached the final in 1931 and lost to Francis Ouimet.
This all-Northwest final developed, appropriately enough, at the Seattle
Golf Club in the Pacific Northwest. The championship was preceded by the
first match for The Americas Cup, among amateur teams representing Canada,
Mexico and the United States, and the United States team had won by a
narrow margin.
