Interest in this Championship was high after the war. The largest galleries
since 1930 were reported in September at Baltusrol Golf Club, Springfield,
N.J. Robert H. (Skee) Riegel, of the Oakmont Club, Glendale, Calif., established
a new qualifying record with 69-67-136. After sectional qualifying, 150
players competed for 64 places. Stanley E. (Ted) Bishop of the Norfolk
(Mass.) Golf Club, had an overtime final with Smiley Quick, and won on
the 37th hole.
