The USGA, with its five charter clubs, was formed in December, 1894,
and initiated its first Championship at the Newport (R.I.) Golf Club,
October 1-3, 1895. Charles B. Macdonald, of the Chicago Golf Club, won
handily defeating Charles E. Sands, of St. Andrews, N.Y., 12 and 11. It
was entirely at match play, with no qualifying, and 32 were drawn.
