Kentucky’s
Holmes Earns Medalist Honors At U.S. Amateur
Oakmont,
Pa. – John Holmes, 21, of Campbellsville, Ky., shot a 2-under par
68 at Pittsburgh Field Club for a 36-hole total of 2-under 138,
earning him medalist honors for the stroke play portion of the U.S.
Amateur Championship. His total was one better than the 1-under
totals (139) posted by Trip Kuehne, 31, of Dallas, Texas, and Bill
Hurley, 21, of Leesburg, Va. Kuehne played his second round
at the more difficult and more famous Oakmont Country Club, which
has hosted seven U.S. Opens.
Brock
Mackenzie, 22, of Yakima, Wash., and Camilo Villegas, 21, of Colombia
had 140. Five more were at 1-over 141, including Ryan Moore, 20,
of Puyallup, Wash., who led with a 65 at the Field Club on the first
day.
Play
will continue at 9 a.m. ( EDT ) Wednesday with the low 64 scores
advancing to match play. The cut for match play came at 7-over par
147 with 14 golfers in a playoff starting at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday
to determine the final 12 spots for match play. The championship
runs through Sunday’s 36-hole final.
Holmes,
a junior at the University of Kentucky who has never had a lesson,
made his mark earlier this year by qualifying for the U.S. Open.
He missed the cut, but shot 69 in his second round. He also had
three solid rounds at this year’s NCAA Championship before slipping
to finish tied for 16th.
"I
feel like I’ve got a little to prove,” said Holmes, who won the
2003 Kentucky Open. “I want to get my name out there a little more.
The 69 at the Open was a confidence builder. I found I’m not that
far away from playing with those guys. I’m getting closer to my
dream to play on the PGA Tour.”
The
most notable of the top finishers is Kuehne, who is playing in his
fourth Amateur. He was the runner-up to Tiger Woods in 1994. His
younger brother, Hank, won the 1998 Amateur and now plays on the
PGA Tour. His younger sister, Kelli, is a two-time U.S. Women’s
Amateur champion who now plays professionally.
"There’s
one more thing to do in my amateur career, and that’s for me to
win a USGA title,” said Trip, who works as a stock analyst. “Then,
I can ride off into the sunset. There’s one more notch for the
Kuehne family in amateur golf.”
Kuehne,
who was low amateur at this summer’s U.S. Open, where he shot a
third-round 67, played Oakmont to even par 70 on Tuesday, reaching
the two 600-yard par 5s in two. One he eagled, the other he birdied.
"I
think I’m a better player now than back then (1994),” said Kuehne.
“I’m more in control now. Back then, I took golf for granted because
I had a lot of God-given ability.”
Moore,
who made the cut at the 2003 Masters, was looking like the clear-cut
medalist until he went 6 over on his last nine holes.
"Unfortunately,
I had the thought in my head that I could bogey the last nine holes
and still make the cut,” said Moore. “I probably shouldn’t have
thought that.”
Kuehne,
Mackenzie and Moore are three of the eight players already named
to the USA Walker Cup team that will play against a team from Great
Britain and Ireland next month.
Three
other Walker-Cuppers advanced to match play. They are: Adam Rubinson,
23, of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Bill Haas, 21, of Greer, S.C., at 143;
and Casey Wittenberg, 18, of Memphis, Tenn., at 145.
Reigning
U.S. Mid-Amateur champion (age 25 and over) George Zahringer, 50,
of New York, N.Y., was among those in the playoff and 1995 Mid-Amateur
winner Jerry Courville, 44, of Milford, Conn., advanced with 145
total.
Greg
Reynolds, 56, of Grand Blanc, Mich., the reigning USGA Senior Amateur
champion (age 55 and older), is the oldest player to advance. He
finished at 6-over 146.
Oakmont
showed its teeth over two days and 312 rounds with only one golfer,
Steve Conway, 21, of Irvine , Calif., finishing under par. He shot
a 1-under 69 on Monday. The scoring average at Oakmont was an
incredible 79.
The
Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United
States Golf Association annually, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
