1936
Entries were growing: 1,118 this year from 32 qualifying points, 210
in the tournament proper. Both Walker Cup teams were present. John W.
Fischer, playing on the oft-tested Garden City course, was one down and
three to play against visiting Walker Cupper, Scotsman Jack McLean, in
the final and saved a half on the 34th only by virtue of a dead stymie
against McLean.
They then halved the 35th in birdie 4s, Fischer dropped a 12-foot putt
for a birdie 2 to square the match on the home green and a 20-foot putt
for a birdie 3 to win on the first extra hole.
